The Tompkins Cortland Community College volleyball team got its season under way Thursday, hosting Corning Community College in a Mid-State Athletic Conference match. After getting over early jitters, the Panthers showed signs of improvement the entire night before eventually falling in straight sets. With the win, Corning improves to 3-2 on the year overall and 2-0 in the MSAC.

Being the first time on the court and facing an opponent that had already played four matches, the Panthers took some time to get settled. Corning scored the first seven points while jumping to a 16-5 lead in the first set. The Red Barons eventually won the opener 25-12.

The second set was better for the home team, as an ace by Ashley Smith (Lansing H.S./Lansing) started a four-point rally that gave Tompkins Cortland a 9-8 lead early. Corning regained the lead, but the score remained close until a late rally stretched the final margin to 25-17.

The third and final set showed the heart of the Panthers. After falling behind big early, Tompkins Cortland rallied from down 14-4 to pull within four at 18-14. Unfortunately, the rally ran out of gas and Corning put the match away with a 7-1 run, ending the set at 25-15.

Smith finished the day with five kills and five digs. Nia Stipetić (Lansing H.S./Ithaca) also had five kills and Amanda Green (Lansing H.S./Lansing) finished with eight assists and five digs. Jasmine Pooler (Moravia H.S./Moravia) added six digs and three assists.

The Panthers move into regional pod play this weekend, playing at Jefferson Community College Saturday. The Panthers will play three matches, taking on Jefferson, Onondaga Community College, and Cayuga Community College.
