The coldest day of the year saw the Tompkins Cortland women's basketball team have its coldest day shooting of the year. Playing at home on Saturday, the Panthers lost to Fulton-Montgomery Community College, 63-45. The Panthers are now 3-4 overall while Fulton-Montgomery is now 0-1.

With the temperature outside hovering around 0 degrees, the Panthers shooting was nearly as cold. The team missed their first five shots while falling behind 8-0. The first quarter ended with the home team down 18-7 after making just 3-of-19 from the floor. Things improved slightly in the second quarter, with the Panthers going 5-of-18 and cutting a pair of points off the deficit, heading to the half trailing 30-21. Unfortunately, the upward trending ended at the break. Over the final two quarters the Panthers went 8-of-36 from the floor, including just 2-of-21 on 3-pointers, and Fulton-Montgomery pulled away to secure the win.

Madison Kelly (Moravia/Moravia H.S.) led all scorers with 17 points, adding 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Karissa Wilbur (McGraw/McGraw H.S.) had 11 points, 5 blocks, and 2 assists, and Simone Smith (Ithaca/Ithaca H.S.) finished with 10 points, 6 steals, and 5 rebounds.

Looking ahead

It's a quick turnaround as the Panthers are back in action Sunday with a home game against Jefferson Community College. Tip-off for the game, which was originally scheduled for last semester, is set for 1 p.m.
