The Tompkins Cortland Community College women's basketball team opened the season Thursday with a long trip and a strong opponent. The Panthers traveled to Jamestown Community College and lost to the Division II Jayhawks by a final of 76-55. It was Jamestown's season opener as well.

It took a long time for the offense to warm up for the Panthers. Tompkins Cortland made just 2-of-13 in the first quarter while falling behind 19-4. In one stretch spanning the first and second quarters, the Panthers went more than eight minutes between scoring while Jamestown raced out to the lead. A more competitive second quarter saw the Panthers cut the lead to 11 points at 30-19 before settling in at 33-21 at the half. Jamestown held a 15-10 advantage in the third quarter, sealing the win and despite a big fourth quarter that saw the Panthers make nine baskets from the floor (one more than the first three quarters combined).

A pair of freshmen led the Panthers in scoring. Reyanah Brown (Syracuse/Syracuse Academy of Science) had the biggest night with a double-double of 18 rebounds and 13 points, while also blocking three shots. MacKenzie Kenyon (Ovid/South Seneca H.S.) had 14 points and five rebounds. Jaida Washington (Elmira/Elmira H.S.) had 10 points, six rebounds, and four blocks and Taylor Day (Brooktondale/Ithaca H.S.) had nine points, four blocks, and two rebounds, steals, and assists.

The Panthers next take the court Sunday for the home opener. The Panthers host Fulton-Montgomery Community College at 1 p.m.
