Panthers Open Season with Road Loss

A 51-point second half wasn't enough for the Tompkins Cortland Community College men's basketball team Tuesday as the Panthers dropped the season-opener to Jamestown Community College 91-82.

The scoring bonanza after halftime wasn't enough to make up for a hole the Panthers were in after Jamestown shot better than 50% from the floor in the first half. After Tompkins Cortland took a very early lead, the Jayhawks stormed back, using a 7-0 run to spark a half that saw the home team outscore the Panthers 44-31. Jamestown answered Tompkins Cortland in the second half, keeping the spread in double figures until the final minute.

Four Panthers scored in double figures. Tahleek Weekes (South Queens/Construction H.S.) had a big game in his Panthers debut, scoring 27 points and grabbing four rebounds. Mario Antenor (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla./Coconut Creek H.S.) poured in 18 points, Bakary Magas (Harlem/Heritage H.S.) had 13 points and seven rebounds, and Jonathan Baker (Staten Island/Curtis H.S.) had 11 points and five boards.

After running with the Division II Jayhawks, the Panthers will now open Division III play with a home game against Fulton-Montgomery Community College Sunday at 3 p.m.
