A pair of strong starting pitching efforts helped the Panthers earn a doubleheader split with Jamestown Community College on Thursday. TC3 won the opener 7-2 behind Wynne before dropping the second game by the same 7-2 score. The Panthers are now 8-22 overall and 4-12 in the Region 3 West Division. Jamestown stands at 11-19 overall and 7-11 in the West Division.

Game One: Tompkins Cortland 7, Jamestown 2

Talfourd Wynne (Philadelphia/Indian River H.S.) was locked in for game one. He opened the game by striking out the Jamestown leadoff hitter, and proceeded to keep the Jayhawks off balance the entire game. He allowed just three hits and one earned run, and at one point set down eight straight batters in a row. The offense supported his strong pitching by scoring in four of the first five innings, with three in the third putting the Panthers in front with a comfortable 6-1 lead.

Julian Poleon (Brooklyn/Abraham Lincoln H.S.), Noboru Shinohara (Tokyo, Japan/Tohopekaliga H.S.), and Jason Winstanley (Lewiston/Lewiston-Porter H.S.) each had two hits, with Poleon and Winstanley each counting a double among their hits.

Wynn is now 5-1 on the season.

Game Two: Jamestown 7, Tompkins Cortland 2

The Panthers had another quality start in game two, but the bullpen couldn't close it out. Trey Bova (Syracuse/ East Syracuse Minoa H.S.) was fantastic through four innings, matching zeros with the Jamestown starter. In the top of the fifth, the Jayhawks pushed one across, but Bova minimized the damage, getting a strike out with the bases loaded for the final out of the inning. The panthers pushed two across in the bottom of the inning, taking a 2-1 lead into the sixth.

Bova induced a groundout to open the sixth, but the next two batters each hit singles. The hits were the first Bova had allowed since the first inning, but they spelled the end of the day for the left, who was lifted with a 2-1 lead and two runners in base. The bullpen wasn't able to hold the lead, allowing both inherited runners to score along with four more, putting the Jayhawks up 7-2 by the time the top of the sixth inning ended. With two more at bats, the Panthers were unable to mount any threat, leaving the final score at 7-2.

Only four Panthers had hits in the nightcap, and none went for extra bases. Bova was the hard-luck loser, being tagged for three runs while striking out five over five-and-a-third innings of work.

Looking ahead

Hoping to avoid predicted weekend rain, the Panthers have moved their home doubleheader with Erie Community College up a day and will now play Friday at 2 p.m.
