Outstanding pitching and timely hitting led the Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Onondaga Community College on Sunday, 6-2 and 3-0. Tompkins Cortland is now 5-22 overall and 5-13 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Onondaga is 18-22 overall and 12-10 in the MSAC.

Game One: Tompkins Cortland 6, Onondaga 2

Christian Idrovo (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Unidad Educativa Javier H.S.) was in control on the mound in game one. Through five innings, he faced just two batters over the minimum, with only one advancing past first base. The Tompkins Cortland offense did a little better, scoring one in the first inning before stringing together three two-out hits in the fifth inning to score three times and take a 4-0 lead. Idrovo ran out of gas in the sixth, loading the bases and forcing in a run with a walk before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Gabriel Fonseca Mimi, Fla. Mater Lakes Academy) came on in relief and faced just two batter to get out of the inning with the lead still intact, 4-2 A pair of insurance runs in the bottom sixth made it 6-2, and Gabriel Gilbert (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Montessori H.S.) shifted over to the mound in the seventh to seal the win.

Idrovo's final line was 5.2 innings pitched, two hits, two runs allowed, and two strikeouts. Kannon VanDuzer (Sayre, Penn./Sayre Area H.S.), Frank Marra (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown H.S.) and Jeremy McGrath (Henderson Harbor/Belleville Henderson H.S.) each had two hits and one RBI in game one.  Jacob Bogacz (Morrisville/Morrisville-Eaton H.S.) drove in two runs for the winners.

Game Two: Tompkins Cortland 3, Onondaga 0

After Idrovo set the tone for the day on the mound in game one, Gilbert brought it home in game two.  The freshman was masterful, allowing just two hits and no runs over seven innings. Only four Lazers reached base the entire game, and it wasn't until the last inning that one made it past first base. Faced with the only threat of the game, Gilbert locked down with back-to-back strikeouts and a groundout to cap off his gem. Including his work closing out game one, Gilbert threw eight consecutive scoreless innings.

Opportune offense made Gilbert a winner. In the second inning, Dan Mrowinski (Syracuse/Solvay H.S.) led off with a single, but two outs later, he was still at first base. After Bradley Addicott (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson H.S.) moved him to third with a single, a wild pitch scored Mrowinski and advanced Addicott all the way to third base. A bloop single by Ledy Alvarez (Guayaquil, Ecuador/Colegio Americano) scored Addicott, and the Panthers had a 2-0 lead. Chances with runners in scoring position went by the wayside in the fourth and fifth innings, but an insurance run finally came in the sixth when Mrowinski led off with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mitch Shipman (Dryden/Dryden H.S.), and came around to score on two-out single by Addicott.

The Panthers finished game two with just four hits, but all four played a part in scoring runs. Gilbert struck out five on the mound, and the Panthers played error-free behind him to preserve the first shutout of the season.
