Behind the power arm of Nick Cody (Cortland/Cortland H.S.), the Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team earned a split of a doubleheader with SUNY Broome on Thursday. The Panthers won the opener 12-0 before falling in the nightcap 14-9. Tompkins Cortland is now 4-18 overall and 4-8 against Mid-State Athletic Conference rivals. Broome is 4-16 overall and 3-11 in the MSAC.

Game One: Tompkins Cortland 12, Broome 0  (5 innings)

Cody has been the ace of the pitching staff all season, and when he's been on, he's been very, very good. Thursday was one of those days. The right-hander allowed just one hit while striking out 11 of the 21 batters he faced. It was the second time this season he has reached double figures in strikeouts, and the third time this year he has held opponents to three hits or less over five or more innings.

The offense provided more than enough support, piling up eight runs in the second inning and then tacking on a pair of runs in each of the third and fourth frames. Eli Gordon (Ithaca/Ithaca H.S.) had a big game, going 3-for-3 with a double, 3 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Jacob Bogacz (Morrisville/Morrisville-Eaton H.S.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI, and Brayden Ferris (Candor/Candor H.S.) and Nate Macek (Pittsford/Rush Henrietta H.S.) each doubled in the win.

Game Two: Broome 14, Tompkins Cortland 9

The offense had another big effort in game two, capping a day that produced the most runs the Panthers have scored in a doubleheader all season. The team trailed from the first inning on, but never gave, scoring in six of the seven innings and scrapping back to keep the game close the entire way. Three different Panthers had three hits in game two. Isaiah Daniels (Atlanta, Ga./Hampton) went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Ferris also had a pair of doubles while going 3-for-4, and Dylan Higgins (Trumansburg/Charles O. Dickerson H.S.) finished 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI.

Looking ahead
