The Tompkins Cortland Community College softball team was swept in doubleheader at home on Thursday, falling to Hudson Valley Community College 20-3 and 15-0. Tompkins Cortland is now 0-18 on the season; Hudson Valley, the #5 team in the latest Region 3 coaches poll, improves to 12-15 overall and 10-7 in region.

Game One: Hudson Valley 20, Tompkins Cortland 3  (6 innings)

Game one was a more competitive game than the final score indicates. Hudson Valley scored three in the top of the first inning, but the Panther came back with a run in the bottom. The second and third innings were scoreless for both teams, and Hudson Valley added two runs in the fourth to make the score 5-1 heading to the fifth inning. In the fifth the Vikings scored four runs to lead 9-1, but the Panthers came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to keep the game going. Things fell apart in the sixth as the Vikings scored ten runs before the first out was recorded, eventually finishing with 11 in the inning and an insurmountable lead.

Gabby Foley (Barton/Tioga H.S.) went 2-for-2 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Abby Foley (Barton/Tioga H.S.) scored two runs and Aliana Hart (Fort Covington/Salmon River H.S.) and Lana Thousand (Onondaga/Onondaga H.S.) each had a hit.

Game Two: Hudson Valley 15, Tompkins Cortland 0  (5 innings)

The Panthers were kept off balance at the plate in game two. The team only struck out twice in the nightcap, but hard-hit balls were hard to come by. Thousand was the only Panther to record a hit in game two when she led off the second inning with a single. She moved to second on a walk and eventually was forced out at third on a fielder's choice. No Panther reached third base in game two.

Looking ahead

The Panthers are scheduled to host SUNY Adirondack on Saturday.
