The Tompkins Cortland Community College softball team dropped a road doubleheader Sunday, losing to Niagara County Community College 16-4 and 12-0. Tompkins Cortland is now 0-16 on the season; Niagara is 18-13.

Game One: Niagara 16, Tompkins Cortland 4  (5 innings)

The Panthers jumped ahead in the first inning, with Abby Foley (Barton/Tioga H.S.) opening the game with a walk and Gabby Foley (Barton/Tioga H.S.) following with a double. A sacrifice fly by Lana Thousand (Onondaga/Onondaga H.S.) and a single by Austyn Vance (Nichols/Tioga H.S.) put the Panthers up 2-0 after their first at bats. Unfortunately, the lead didn't last long as Niagara came back with 12 runs in the bottom of the first. The Thunderwolves then tacked on three more in the second to lead 15-2. Despite two runs in the third, the Panthers couldn't mount a threat to the Niagara lead.

Abby Foley and Aliana Hart (Fort Covington/Salmon River H.S.) each had two hits and a run scored in game one. Sara Cargen (Homer/Homer H.S.) drove in two for the Panthers.

Game Two: Niagara 12, Tompkins Cortland 0  (5 innings)

The Panthers couldn't mount much offense in game two, putting a runner in scoring position just twice. Niagara put five on the board in the second and fourth innings before finishing the scoring with a pair in the fifth.

Of the five hits in game two, three came from the bottom of the order as Elizabeth Cobb (Cortland/Cortland Cristian Academy), Marybeth Ortlieb (Cortland/Home School), and Hannah Forehand (Groton/Victory Christian Academy) each went 1-for-2. Vance and Gabby Foley accounted for the other two hits for Tompkins Cortland.

Looking ahead

The Panthers return home Thursday to take on Hudson Valley Community College.
