The home opener was a rough one for the Tompkins Cortland Community College softball team as the Panthers lost both ends of a doubleheader against SUNY Broome on Monday, 19-2 and 24-3. Tompkins Cortland drops to 0-4 on the season while Broome improves to 3-7.

Game One: Broome 19, Tompkins Cortland 2  (5 innings)

The visiting Hornets struck early, taking advantage of three walks and three errors in the top of the first inning to score seven runs. Broome added on runs, building the lead to 17-0 before the Panthers got on the board in the fourth inning.

The Panthers scoring rally started with a Mackenzie Rochford (Dryden/Dryden H.S.) single and a walk to Abby Villnave (Homer/homer H.S.). After a strikeout, Adrianna Royce (Newfield/Newfield H.S.) drew a walk to load the bases. Kari Mosher (Horseheads/Horseheads H.S.) produced the first run with an RBI single. Teyara Lee (Moravia/Moravia H.S.) followed with an RBI groundout, driving in the final run of the game for the Panthers. Broome tacked on a pair in the fifth to make the final 19-2.

Shalynn Bizardi (Montezuma/Dana L. West H.S.) joined Rochford and Mosher in the hit column in game one for the Panthers.

Game Two: Broome 24, Tompkins Cortland 3  (5 innings)

The Panthers struck first in the second game. Bizardi led off the game with walk, moved to second on an error, and then came around to score on a single by Rochford. The lead evaporated in the bottom of the first when Broome again took advantage of mistakes by the Panthers to plate four runs. A pair in the second made it 6-1 before the Hornets blew things open with 14 runs in the third.

Bizardi, Rochford, and Villnave accounted for the three hits for the Panthers in game two.
