The Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team opened the 2018 season Saturday, taking to the road for a Mid-State Athletic Conference showdown with SUNY Broome. The Panthers made the trip worthwhile, bringing home a 14-9 win to start the season with a 1-0 record.

Tompkins Cortland's leading returning scorer was the first to get the Panthers on the board in 2018. Jack Collmer (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill H.S./Vernon) found the net in just the second minute of play, giving the Panthers the 1-0 lead. Broome answered to even the score, but after assisting on the first goal, Anthony Irizarry (Middletown H.S./Middletown) scored his first goal of the season, putting the Panthers back in front 2-1. Broome again responded to tie the game, but goals by Collmer, Irizarry, and Padraic Iannello (Dryden H.S./Dryden) gave the Panthers the lead at 7-4 heading into the half. Tompkins Cortland wouldn't relinquish the lead during the second half, outscoring the Hornets 3-1 in the third and 5-4 in the fourth to put the 14-9 final.

Irizarry made an impressive debut for the Panthers, tying a team record with 11 points by scoring seven goals and handing out four assists. Collmer finished with four goals and Iannello found the net three times. Matthew Bisono (Deer Park H.S./Deer Park) collected a pair of assists.

Bryan Iannello (Dryden H.S./Dryden) earned the win in goal with 12 saves.

The Panthers host Finger Lakes Community College Wednesday. The home opener gets underway at 4 p.m.
