The Panthers baseball team opened West Division play on a down note on Tuesday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader at Onondaga Community College, 8-2 and 13-3. Tompkins Cortland drops to 0-6 overall while Onondaga improves to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in division.
Game One: Onondaga 8, Tompkins Cortland 2
The Panthers led 2-0 early in game one, thanks in part to an RBI double from Jason Winstanley (Lewiston/Lewiston-Porter H.S.). Onondaga tied the game with two in the bottom of the third and then broke it open with four runs in the fifth.
Colin Schneider (Utica/Notre Dame H.S.) took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs while striking out four over innings of work.
Game Two: Onondaga 13, Tompkins Cortland 3
Onondaga jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings of game two. The Panthers tried to get back in the game, narrowing the gap to 8-3 in the 5th inning, but the Lazers put it away with five runs in the sixth.
Dan Mrowinski (Syracuse/Solvay H.S.) had a two-run double and Frank Marra (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) went 2-for-3 at the plate.
