A complete game shutout for sophomore pitcher Jake Woods (Cortland/Cortland H.S.) helped the Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team to a split of a doubleheader with Finger Lakes Community College Friday. The Panthers won the opener 4-0 before dropping the second game 11-7. The Panthers are now 16-14 overall and 8-10 in the West Division. Finger Lakes is 16-22 overall and 12-12 in the West.

Game 1: Tompkins Cortland 4, Finger Lakes 0

Woods was the story of game one, allowing just four hits while striking out eight batters. He allowed a runner into scoring position in just one inning, and closed the game by striking out the last four batters he faced. The win improves Woods to 5-1 on the year, tying him for the College's record for wins in a single season.

Offensively, the Panthers scored four runs on five hits, taking advantage of four walks and three errors by the Lakers. Charlie Hammel (Rochester/Rush-Henrietta H.S.) had the game-winning RBI with a single in the third. Johnny WIke (Syracuse/Bishop Grimes H.S.) and Austin Kulas (Moravia/Moravia H.S.) each had a single and an RBI for the winners.

Game 2: Finger Lakes 11, Tompkins Cortland 7  (game called after six innings due to rain)

Trying for a sweep, the Panthers took the lead in the first inning, but the Lakers came back with a five-run third inning to move in front 5-1. Tompkins Cortland came back to within one at 6-5 after four innings, but Finger Lakes put up another five runs in the fifth to make it 11-5. The Panthers chipped away at the lead with two runs in the sixth and after Zachary Travis (Cortland/Cortland H.S.) kept the Lakers off the board in the top of the seventh, the home team went to the bottom of the seventh down 11-7. In the bottom of the seventh, the rains that had threatened all afternoon arrived and quickly picked up in intensity as the Panthers tried to rally. With one out and a runner on third, the game was stopped and called due to the rain. The shortened game officially reverts to the end of the sixth inning, giving the Lakers an 11-7 win, and erasing all the stats from the seventh inning.

Chris Micucci (Auburn/Auburn H.S.) went 3-for-4 from the top of the lineup, scoring twice and stealing three bases. Hammel went 2-for-4 and Daniel Santiago (Newburgh/Newburgh Academy) went 2-for-3 with a double. Ridge Walker (Moravia/Moravia H.S.) took the loss on the mound, dropping his record to 2-3 on the season.

The Panthers are scheduled to play SUNY Broome this weekend in a pair of doubleheaders. The teams are to play in Binghamton Saturday and Dryden on Sunday.
