Despite a very promising start to the day, the end results were disappointing for the Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team Tuesday. Playing at Finger Lakes Community College, the Panthers lost both ends of the doubleheader, 5-4 and 16-6. The Panthers are now 7-8 overall and 0-4 in the West Division on the year while Finger Lakes is 8-6 overall and 4-0 in the West Division.

Game 1: Finger Lakes 5, Tompkins Cortland 4

The game started very well for the Panthers. In the top of the first, Tompkins Cortland produced three runs, with Storm Grant (Homer/Homer H.S.) providing the big blow with a two-run homer. Finger Lakes responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and then added single runs in the second and the third to take the lead. After the Lakers added an insurance run in the sixth, Tompkins Cortland loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. A groundout scored a run and moved the tying run to third, but the runner was stranded when the game ended with a groundout.

Justin Barber (Brookfield/Brookfield H.S.) took the loss on the mound, working three innings and striking out three. He is now 1-1 on the year.

Game 2: Finger Lakes 16, Tompkins Cortland 6 (5 innings)

Game two saw Finger Lakes score in each of its four at bats, but the Panthers battled. After the Lakers took a 4-0 lead after two innings, Tompkins Cortland put three runs on the board in the third to pull within one. Finger Lakes expanded the lead with six runs in the bottom of the frame, making the score 10-3 after three innings. The Panthers again tried to rally, scoring three in the top of the fourth, but the Lakers slammed the door with six more runs in the bottom of the fourth, making it 16-6. When the Panthers couldn't score in the top of the fifth, the game was called due to the 10-run rule.

Alex Babcock (Cortland/Cortland H.S.) finished game two going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Chris Micucci (Auburn/Auburn H.S.) picked up a pair of RBI while going 1-for-2.

Christian Ballard (Alpine, Texas/Blanchard (Okla.) H.S.) started the game and took the loss to drop to 1-1 on the year.

The Panthers look to get even with Finger Lakes with a home doubleheader on Thursday.
