Dominating pitching and timely hitting helped the Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Jefferson Community College Wednesday. The Panthers rallied for wins by scores of 3-2 and 2-1 to win both games played at Cornell University's Hoy Field. The Panthers are now 7-3 on the year while Jefferson stands at 3-11.

Game 1: Tompkins Cortland 3, Jefferson 2

Jake Woods (Cortland/Cortland H.S.) took the mound in game one, and delivered a gem. After allowing single runs in the first and second innings, he shut down the Cannoneers the rest of the way, at one point retiring 11 straight batters. His strong work gave the offense time to find a rhythm, eventually breaking through in the bottom of the fifth.

Austin Kulas (Moravia/Moravia H.S.) started the frame by working full-count walk to give the Panthers just their fourth baserunner of the game. Johnny Wike (Syracuse/Bishop Grimes H.S.) followed with a single, moving Kulas into scoring position. Chris Micucci (Auburn/Auburn H.S.) delivered the first run with a single to score Kulas and move Wike up the base paths. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Alex Babcock (Cortland/Cortland H.S.) hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Wike with the tying run. A single by Charlie Hammel (Rochester/Rush-Henrietta H.S.) set the stage for Garret Hunter (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox H.S.), who delivered the go-ahead run with a two-out RBI single.

Woods made the runs stand, allowing a base runner in each of the final two innings, but keeping the runs column clean. After striking out the first two batters of the last inning, the game ended on a flyout to Micucci in center field.

Micucci and Brandon Grant (Homer/Homer H.S.) each had two hits to pace the attack. Woods (2-1) tossed all seven innings, allowing two runs while striking out five and walking none.

Game 2: Tompkins Cortland 2, Jefferson 1

The pitching was the highlight of game two for both teams. Neither team scored until the sixth, by which time the two teams had combined for just five hits. Jefferson got on the board first, plating an unearned run thanks to a walk, a hit, a fielder's choice, and an error. In the bottom of the frame, Micucci started things with a leadoff single, just the second hit of the game for the Panthers. After a flyout, an error, and a groundout, runners stood on second and third, begging for a way to come home. Like he did in the first game, Hunter came through in the clutch, stroking a two-out double to score both runs and put the Panthers ahead going into the final inning.

Evan Plante (Albany/Christian Brothers Academy), who came out of the bullpen to record the final out of the sixth, closed out the win with a scoreless seventh. Plante (1-0) earned the win by retiring all four batters he faced, including three by strikeout.

Next up for the Panthers is a non-region game against the Ithaca College J.V. team Friday at 4 p.m. at Ithaca.
