The Tompkins Cortland women's basketball team found the range early and often Wednesday, connecting on nine 3-pointers in a 63-45 win over Finger Lakes Community College. Tompkins Cortland is now 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Finger Lakes is 3-7 overall and 0-1 in the MSAC.
Ashley Shortsleeve (Cortland/Cortland H.S.) continued her strong play of late, starting with a bang by connecting on three 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Panthers jumped ahead 19-13. Two more from long distance in the second quarter gave Shortsleeve five 3-pointers and the Panthers a 32-22 lead heading into halftime.
The lead remained around ten points most of the third quarter, with Finger Lakes scoring the final three points to cut the margin to 45-38, but the Panthers responded by opening the final quarter with a 9-0 run to put the game away.
By the final horn, Shortsleeve had connected on six 3-pointers, one shy of the team record, for 18 points. Shantasia Jeffrey (Harlem/Curtis H.S.) shared leading-scorer honors with 18 points while also hauling in 16 rebounds. K'Anndra Rhoden (Brentwood/Brentwood H.S.) had a well-rounded line, coming close to a quadruple-double with 12 points, 11 steals, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists. Shaylin Heidl (Candor/Candor H.S.) grabbed 12 rebounds and Kerrin O'Shaughnessy (Worcester/Worcester H.S.) pulled down 10.
The Panthers close out the fall semester with a home game on Sunday against North Country Community College. Tip between the Panthers and Saints is at noon.
