Costly fielding errors in both games proved too much for the Panthers softball team to overcome Saturday, losing both ends of a doubleheader AT SUNY Adirondack. Tompkins Cortland drops to 4-12 on the season while Adirondack improves to 4-11.

Game One: Adirondack 7, Tompkins Cortland 5

Things started well for the Panthers, with Kiara Grover (Scio/Scio H.S.) driving in Abby Foley (Barton/Toga H.S.) with the first run in the top of the first inning. Adirondack responded quickly with three in the bottom of the first and another in the second. In the top of the third, Grover was at it again, this time drilling her first homer on the season, a three-run shot to tie the game at 4-4.

Adirondack scored two in the bottom of the third, and then tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to lead 7-4 heading into the seventh. Andrea Medovich (Kirkwood/Windsor H.S.) led off the inning with a single, and then came around to score on an error to make it a 7-5 game. The rally fizzled without any more runs scoring, making the final a two-run deficit.

Grover pitched the complete game. With the defense committing four errors behind her, only three of the seven runs allowed were earned.

Game Two: Adirondack 12, Tompkins Cortland 3  (five innings)

The error bug bite extra hard in game two, with a total of five errors over five innings allowing 11 unearned runs to score. The Panthers were held off the scoreboard until the last of the fifth, when Elizabeth Cobb (Cortland/Cortland Christian Academy) started a two-out rally with a single. Medovich walked and came around to score with Cobb on a triple by Abby Foley. Gabby Foley (Barton/Tioga H.S.) drove in her sister with a single, but the rally ended with three runs.

Looking ahead

The Panthers will look to get back on track with a non-region doubleheader with Hartwick College, scheduled for noon on Sunday in Dryden.
