The Panthers softball team traveled north to take on Jefferson Community College on Thursday, dropping a doubleheader to a strong Cannoneers squad. The Panthers are now 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference while Jefferson improves to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the MSAC.

Game One: Jefferson 8, Tompkins Cortland 0  (five innings)

The Panthers had a rough opener on both sides of the ball. At the plate, the team managed just two hits, a double by Lana Thousand (Onondaga/Onondaga H.S.) and a single by Austyn Vance (Nichols/Tioga H.S.). The defense struggled as well, with five errors contributing to five of the runs being unearned.

Game Two: Jefferson 10, Tompkins Cortland 6

Things went much better in the nightcap. Starting pitcher Kiara Grover (Scio/Scio H.S.) was effective over her five innings of work, striking out six. She helped herself at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

The top of the lineup continued its strong start to the season. Andrea Medovich (Kirkwood/Windsor H.S.) and Abby Foley (Baton/Tioga H.S.) each scored twice, while Gabby Foley (Barton/Tioga H.S.) had a big two-RBI double late in the game to close the gap as the Panthers rallied late.

Looking ahead

The Panthers are scheduled to host Onondaga Community College Saturday.
