Frustrating Loss for Panthers

A big advantage in shots didn't translate into a win for the Tompkins Cortland Community College men's soccer team Saturday as the Panthers lost at Finger Lakes Community College, 2-1. Tompkins Cortland's record is now 7-5 overall, 7-4 in Region III, and 2-2 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Finger Lakes improves to 7-7 overall, 5-6 in Region III, and 2-4 in the MSAC.

The Panthers outshot the Lakers 9-5 in the first half, but it was the home team that enjoyed a 1-0 lead at the break thanks to a penalty kick goal. Tompkins Cortland evened the score on a goal by Amadou Ceesay (DeWitt Clinton H.S./Banjul, Gambia) with under eight minutes left to play, but Finger Lakes scored less than two minutes later to lead 2-1. When the final horn sounded, the score was still 2-1 in favor of the Lakers, despite a 21-11 advantage in shots for the Panthers. The difference in number of shots on goal was even more significant: 13-4 in favor the Panthers.

The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the Panthers. With three games left in the regular season, the team heads back to Dryden for the home finale on Wednesday against Cayuga Community College at 3 p.m.
