Panthers End Skid with 2-0 Win

The Tompkins Cortland Community College men's soccer team picked up a much-needed win Wednesday, blanking SUNY Adirondack 2-0 in Dryden. The win snapped a three-game streak that saw the Panthers go winless while being outscored 14-3. It also moved Tompkins Cortland back above .500 on the year with a record of 5-4 overall and 5-3 in Region III. Adirondack drops to 5-4-1 overall and 4-4-1 in Region III.

The Panthers wasted no time jumping on the visitors. In the second minute of play, Adam Nichols (Candor H.S./Candor) carried the ball down the left side and crossed a perfect pass to the goal mouth, where Colton Wigsten (Spencer-Van Etten H.S./Spencer) knocked it in for the early 1-0 lead. The soccer gods were on the Panthers side the rest of the half as Adirondack hit the post three times, but couldn't score the equalizer.

The insurance goal came in the second half, with Nichols again playing the role of set-up man. With 11:46 left on the clock, Nichols made a nifty pass while spinning around a defender, finding Shaqueil Johnson (DeWitt Clinton H.S./Clarendon, Jamaica) in the box for a 1-on-1 vs. the Adirondack goalie. When Johnson delivered the score, the Panthers had a 2-0 lead and the game in hand.

Parker Hay (Ithaca H.S./Ithaca) earned the shutout in his first collegiate start, posting three saves along the way.

The Panthers are on the road for the next three games, starting Sunday at Jamestown Community College.
