McMullin Steps Down; Coffman Takes Over Lacrosse Program

Men's Lacrosse Head coach Justin Coffman

After more than a decade with the program, Zach McMullin is stepping down as head coach of the Tompkins Cortland Community College men's lacrosse team. Justin Coffman, McMullin's top assistant coach for most of his tenure, has been promoted to head coach.

"One of the rare things in sport is having a head coach leave on great terms and turn over the program in better shape than he or she found it. This is certainly the case with the departure of Zach McMullin," said Director of Athletics Mick McDaniel. "Coach McMullin has led our program with an unwavering commitment to family, culture, and respect for the game. We are so appreciative of his time at TC3 and know that he will continue to be an amazing coach and ambassador for the sport of lacrosse."

McMullin, who has been connected to the program for nearly 15 years, is leaving the College to pursue other coaching opportunities. "It has been an honor and privilege to have been a part of the Tompkins Cortland Lacrosse program from being a player, an assistant, and then head coach," said McMullin. "My time at TC3 has taught me many lessons on and off the field and I am truly grateful for the relationships I have made with the players, staff, and faculty."

Coffman has been a member of the coaching staff since 2014-15 and has mentored players that earned All-Conference, All-Region, and All-Americans honors. He has extensive experience coaching at different levels and, prior to coming to Tompkins Cortland, he coached 13 USA Lacrosse High School All-Americans at Ithaca High School. He also was a coach for the 2022 Philippines Men's National Lacrosse team at the 2023 World Lacrosse Championship Asia Pacific Qualifier in Jeju Island, South Korea.

"It has been a pleasure and an honor to work with Coach McMullin over the last nine years. He immediately welcomed me into the Tompkins Cortland lacrosse program, and I am very thankful for his guidance and friendship," said Coffman. "McMullin's leadership of the program and his personal relationships with the players have set a high bar. I am excited and thankful for the opportunity to continue the success and traditions that were established during his time."

"As a long-time assistant, Coach Coffman has been an important part of our success," said McDaniel. "It's a priority to take care of our current players during this transition time, and Coach Coffman will certainly do that while also continuing his work in recruiting the best players from Central New York and beyond. Our team is in very capable hands as we head into the 2024 season."
