Panthers Lax Gets Back on Track with Record-Setting Win

The Tompkins Cortland Community College lacrosse team put together a dominating performance Wednesday, beating Mohawk Valley Community College by a final of 20-2. The margin of victory is the biggest in the history of the program and improves the Panthers record to 4-2 on the year. Mohawk Valley drops to 0-3.

The Panthers never trailed, getting on the board first on a goal by Anthony Irizarry (Middletown/Middletown H.S.) in the third minute of play. Mohawk Valley evened the game with a quick score, but the Panthers ran off four straight goals in a two-minute span to make it 5-1 with 9:19 left in the first. Mohawk Valley broke the run with a goal, but Tompkins Cortland closed out the quarter with four more to make the score 9-2 after one. The lead just grew the rest of the way as Mohawk Valley was held off the board and the Panthers added five goals in the second, four in the third, and two in the fourth. 

Eleven different Panthers got in on the scoring, with Irizarry leading the way with 10 points on four goals and a school record-tying six assists. Derek Sammartino (Saddle Brook, N.J./Pascack Hills H.S.) had seven points on five goals and two assists and Matthew Bisono (Deer Park/Deer Park H.S.) had six points on four goals and a pair of assists. Ayden Muhs (Hampton Bays/Hampton Bays H.S.) finished with a goal and two assists, Erik Dickerson (Pine Bush/John S. Burke Catholic H.S.) had two goals, and Tyler Ponticello (Homer/Homer H.S.) and Connor O'Brien (Dryden/Dryden H.S.) each had a goal and an assist. Sebastien Byas (Brooklyn/Cobble Hill School of the American Studies) and Ian Kilts (Dryden/Dryden H.S.) each had a goal and Jack Collmer (Vernon/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) and Tyson Rogers (Wallkill/Wallkill H.S.) each had an assist.

Goalie Bryan Iannello (Dryden/Dryden H.S.) earned the win with four saves.

Next up for the Panthers is a non-region contest with Union County College (N.J.), scheduled for home on Friday at 4 p.m.
