Fifth-Place Finish for Panthers in Season Opener

2018 golf team

This spring has been unkind to any outdoor sports, but perhaps none more so than golf. With golf courses late opening all across the state, teams in Region III found it tough to get many practice rounds in heading into the season-opening tournament Friday in Auburn. As a result, many teams put up scores they hope will prove to be their highest of the year. Count Tompkins Cortland Community College among those teams as the Panthers carded a team score of 370 to finish fifth among the nine teams at the Nicholas J. DeSocio Memorial Invite, hosted by Cayuga Community College at the Highland Park Golf Course. Niagara County Community College might have been the lone school to leave the day pleased with its score as the Thunderwolves won the invitational with a score of 318, a full 26 strokes better than runner-up Mohawk Valley Community College.

No Panther finished in the top ten individuals. Jake Woods (Cortland/Cortland H.S.) was the top scorer with an 87, followed by Tyler Clark (Odessa-Montour H.S./Odessa) with a 90. Sean McDaniel (Dryden/Dryden H.S.) had a 92 and William Stouffer (Candor/Candor H.S.) rounded out the team scoring with a 101. Trevor Whittemore (Ithaca/Ithaca H.S.) posted a 102 and Alex Sanford (Cortland/Cortland H.S.) had a 107 in his debut.

The Panthers take part in the Onondaga Community College tournament Saturday, held at Timber Banks Golf Course in Baldwinsville.
