After dropping the opener to SUNY Broome, the Panthers gave the ball to Talfourd Wynne (Philadelphia/Indian River H.S.) for game two, and the home team was rewarded with a gem. Wynne led the way as the Panthers earned a split with the Hornets to move to 4-6 on the year and 2-2 in the Mid-State Athletic Conference. Broome is 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the MSAC.
Game One: Broome 5, Tompkins Cortland 3
Broome kept the Panthers offense quiet in game one, but the game was tied 3-3 heading to the last inning. The Hornets took advantage of a leadoff walk to spark a mini-rally, scoring twice. When the Panthers went down in order in the bottom of the frame, Broome had the game one win.
While the offense managed just five hits, starting pitcher Zachary Dodge (East Hampton/East Hampton H.S.) threw well, striking out eight allowing just two hits over five innings. Daniel Decker (New Windsor/Newburgh Free Academy) took the loss in relief, despite striking out two and allowing just one earned runs over two innings.
Game Two: Tompkins Cortland 5, Broome 2
Wynne was the star of game two, but things started slowly. In the top of first inning, the sophomore struck out three, but also allowed a pair of hits and two runs (one earned). From that point on Wynne put up zeros, finishing the game with eight strikeouts. His teammates took a couple of innings to give him the lead, but they did, scoring one in the second and two in the third. The score held at 3-2 through the sixth inning when Dominic Zona (Rochester/Greece Arcadia H.S.) came up with a clutch, two-out, two-run double to provide some cushion. Wynne was perfect in the seventh, striking out the last two batters to seal the victory for the Panthers.
Zona and Jason Winstanley (Lewiston/Lewiston-Porter H.S.) paced the attack from the top two spots in the lineup, each going 2-for-4.
Looking ahead
